At Quiraing Dog School we can help you train your dog, no matter what breed, size, age or temperament!
Aggression,
separation anxiety or just excessive pulling cause owners who ove their dogs
to despair, making many feel they have no option other than re-homing “man’s
best friend”. This often means they’re just shifting the unwanted behaviour from their home to somebody
else’s. Or worse, many dogs end up
being “put to sleep” because their
behaviour problems are seen as too difficult to treat.
Over the last 6 years Quiraing Dog School (NL) has helped hundreds of Dutch dog owners tackle the problems before it becomes too late and help owners train their dogs to become friendly, well-behaved pets. We have now opened in Edinburgh, Scotland.
At Quiraing we use reward-based training techniques to build a bond of trust between the dog and owner, encouraging the dog to repeat good behaviour. Unwanted behaviour is, mostly, ignored which quickly teaches the dog there’s no benefit in behaving badly. Dangerous behaviour has to be corrected, obviously, but we firmly believe this can always be achieved without the use of choke chains, electric collars or other pain inducing systems.
Our trained behaviour specialist can assist with the
following behaviour problems in your dog:
pulling on the lead, dog-dog aggression, dog-human aggression, running away, fear, destructive behaviour, insecurity, separation anxiety, over-possessiveness, socialization, etc.
Our approach to Behaviour Counseling is a simple but effective one, consisting of the following steps:
1. Questionnaire. You
are asked to complete a comprehensive questionnaire in advance of
counseling. This allows us to focus the session directly to you and
your dog's needs.
2. Counseling session. This
involves an assessment of you and your dog in the place where the dog's
behaviour is mostly formed, your home. The session takes about an hour
and concludes with pointers on how best to start improving your dog's
behaviour.
3. Evaluation & written report. Following
the session we evaluate your situation and your dog's behaviour in more
depth. You will receive a written report detailing our findings,
analysis and advice on the best ways to permanently improve your dog's
behaviour.
4. Follow up. Approximately
two weeks after you receive the report we will contact you to assess
progress and answer any further questions you may have. You are of
course free to call us before this time if you are experiencing
problems.
We have good results with our Behaviour Counselling sessions. But as every dog is different, and some problem behaviour has been going on for some time, it is difficult to say how long it will take for the problem behaviour to be gone. Unfortunately, in some cases, the behaviour will never go away but in most cases the problem behaviour can be made controlable. It also depends on how much time, effort and patience you, as his owner, are prepared to invest. You will be required to work with your dog over a period of time to improve his behaviour with the help of our report and training tools. So we cannot guarantee the behaviour will be solved after the counselling session, but we can give you the right tools to start improving the behaviour.
Sadly, for a very small number of dogs there is no improvement possible. Some dogs duffer from such severe anxiety and/or aggression and are a danger to themselves or their surrounding area. Luckily this isonly a very small percentage of the dogs with problem behaviour, but it does happen.
We always try to be nice and friendly but also direct and honest. There would be no use in telling a dog owner how wonderful their dog is and how well they have trained him, if at the same time he destroys their house and shows aggression to us. We have been hired to improve the dog's behaviour, so we will tell the owner what he or she needs to do to improve it. Sometimes we will tell the owner things they might not want to hear, but are nescessary to make them see what needs to be done. We will never shout at people, call them names or tell them everything they do wrong. We believe in a positive approach when training dogs, rewarding good behaviour and mostly ignoring bad behaviour. The same counts for dog owners. We will let you know what you do right, and point out where you can improve.
Yes, we can do a behaviour assessment for dogs. We can recommend a training programme for you and your dog. Because our training is specifically tailored to your needs, we can then work on the exercises he needs to learn. See our Private Training Page for more information.
The counselling session will take place at your home. Depending on the type of problem behaviour, we may do a behaviour test in your garden or in a local park near your house, for instance when your dog shows aggression to other dogs. We will then bring another dog, who is very experienced in dealing with aggressive dogs and has learned to behave calm and in a non-aggressive manner.
