Quiraing Microchipping Service

Microchipping

Thousands of dogs and cats are reported stolen or lost each year, and thanks to their microchip a great number of them can be returned to their owner within 48 hours. But the unlucky ones that cannot be identified are often never re-united with their owners.

A lot of dogs are stolen for breeding purposes or to be sold on to make some quick money. Last year 12 dogs were reported stolen in Edinburgh and the Lothians, and many more lost.

If your dog or cat is not microchipped yet, please think about having it done as soon as possible. It does not cost much, but can be of great benefit.

Quiraing Dog School is licensed to microchip dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets. The price is very competitive at £15 per animal (the average price in Edinburgh and surrounding are being £25. Some vets even charge £40!).  If you have 5 pets or more (or if you are a dogclub, group of friends or family or a breeder and have 5 or more pets together) you will receive a 20% discount.

Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a Microchip?

A Microchip is a computer chip that contains a unique ID number. It looks like a tMicrochipiny  glass tube and is only 11.5 mm long, containing a copper wire. The microchip emits  a radio wave which can be read by a handheld scanner. The unique number  allocated  to that chip will then appear on the screen of the scanner, thus identifying your animal.

   How is the microchip implanted?

The microchip is implanted in your pet under the skin between the shoulder blades. This is done using a needle and is similar to your pet having a vaccination. Your animal may cry a bit and it may bleed a bit, but this is normal. Most animals recover very quickly, especially when presented with a nice treat!  The whole process takes about 5 seconds.

How do they know the pet is mine by reading the number?

When your pet is microchipped, you fill in a form and give the microchipper your details (name, address, telephone, email, emergency number, name of your pet, kind of pet, breed, sex, date of birth etc.) These details are stored in the National Database along with the microchip number. If your pet is found and the number read, the vet, warden or police (or other organisation that reads the chipnumber) will contact the database and receive your contact details. They will then contact you to let you know your pet has been found.

Help, my pet is missing! What should I do?

Please go to our missing pets page, where we will give you information on how to act when your pet goes missing!

What if I have moved house, or changed my telephone number?

When your pet is chipped and registered, you will receive a certificate within a few weeks, detailing which database your pet is registered with (there are a few in the UK, the most common ones are Petlog, Identichip and Pettrac). When you change address or telephone number , or when you rehome your pet, you need to let them know about the changes or otherwise they won't be able to trace you or the new owner when they find your pet. Most databases will charge you for this, but some offer an additional service whereby you pay a one-off fee and are allowed to change the details as often as needed.

How do I know if the microchipper is qualified to do the microchipping?

Not just vets are allowed to do microchipping. It might even be cheaper to have your pet microchipped by an independant microchipper. However, every microchipper must be trained and qualified to be able to do the microchipping. Ask your microchipper where he or she has done her training. At Quiraing Dog School we are fully trained and qualified by PetDetect and we are also fully insured with Cliverton Insurance to do microchipping.

Will you come to my house to do the microchipping?

To do the microchipping it is important your pet sits perfectly still and feels at ease. Pets often feel most relaxed at their own house. Therefore we offer the possibility to come to your house to do the microchipping. However, we will be planning some microchipping clinics at other locations in the near future, so keep an eye on this website if you would like to attend one of our microchipping clinics.

   How much does it cost?

A survey amongst vets in the Edinburgh area revealed that prices can vary from £18 till £40 per pet. At Quiraing Dog School we charge £15 per pet, and we give a discount of 20% for 5 or more pets microchipped at the same time and place. For instance, if you have a litter of puppies or are a dog training club, walking club or just own 5 or more pets, you will qualify for the discount. However, this excludes microchipping clinics organised by us, where individual animals are brought in for microchipping. For customers living outside the Edinburgh bypass, additional travel expenses will be charged at theTag rate of £0.40 per mile.

Registration for life with Petlog and a tag for your pet's collar is included in the price.
