This is Spud. Spud was stolen in Glasgow at Morrissons
Supermarket on the 10th of September. Spud is owned by Big Issue
seller Matt, who on that day left Spud in the care of a man who
befriended him, so he could get some water. When Matt came back Spud
and his bag were gone.
Spud is a 15 month old Collie/Terrier cross who Matt rescued from a skip. Spud and Matt are very popular with Matt's customers and obviously everyone is very upset that Spud is gone. Please keep your eye out for this lovely boy so he and Matt can be reunited soon. If you have any information please contact the Big Issue office (details below) or us. When your pet goes missing, you obviously want him or her back as soon as possible. On this page we will help you in finding your pet. Lost pets in the Edinburgh area can be listed and we give you information on who to contact and what to do.
Thousands of dogs and cats are reported stolen or lost each year, and thanks to their microchip a great number of them can be returned to their owner within 48 hours. But the unlucky ones that cannot be identified are often never re-united with their owners. If your dog or cat is not microchipped yet, please think about having it done as soon as possible. It does not cost much, but can be of great benefit. We offer a discounted service. Please see our Microchipping Page
1. Check the usual places and unusual places your pet may be hiding. We once found our kitten asleep in the drawer under the oven (after 4 hours of frantic searching). Check cupboards, boxes, attics, the neighbours house, garden shed, under the beds, children's toys (the doll's house was another favorite of our kitten). If he or she is really nowhere to be seen:
2. Contact the police, dogwarden, all vets in your area, kennels/rescue centre, your friends/family, neighbours, other pet owners you know, emaillists you may be subscribed to (even if nothing to do with pets, you never know). Tell people to forward it on. Also call the microchipping database you are registered with and your microchipper (if this is not your vet). If your pet is found and they cannot find your address they may contact your microchipper. If your pet is stolen, always file a report at the local police station. Also contact your pet insurance within 24 hours, to be able to claim any reward money or any compensation when your dog is found dead or stolen. Make sure you do not offer any more reward than your insurance will pay, or be prepared to pay for it yourself.
3. Put a free add on your local sites, like gumtree (www.gumtree.com). Always add a picture, as this will help others identifying your pet and prevents you ending up with 5 brown dogs). Don't forget to contact us so we can put your pet on our site.

4. If your missing pet is a dog, contact DogLost. They are a nationwide charity helping dog owners find their dogs. They have a network of 20.000 registered helpers and will contact the ones in your area to let them knowyour pet has gone missing. They have a very good succes rate. The site also allows you and your friends to print posters advertising your missing dog which you can then put up in the area. (If you are reading this why not go to their site and register as a helper? Or donate some money to help them or organise a fundraising event? They are worth it!)
5. Put up posters in your area, at the supermarket, local school, local park, anywhere you can think of.
6. Contact local radio stations, newspaper, etc. They can often help by running an article or announcing your missing pet on the radio. Send them a picture of your pet and description.
7. There are probably loads more things you can do. Know of anything we haven't listed yet? Let us know and we will include it on this page.
If you are contacted by people claiming to have your pet, and offering it back to you in exchange for money or goods, always immediately contact the police for advice. Even if the people claiming to have your pet say they just found it (which may be true) or if the people claiming to have your pet tell you not to contact the police (if they stole your pet, they obviously wouldn't want police involved).
Never meet the people alone, they may not have your pet but may be out to get your money and/or abuse the situation. If you do arrange to meet up take someone with you and arrange to meet somewhere on neutral grounds, not at your own home. Make sure someone is at your home waiting for you (they may just use the excuse to get you out of your house). If they have your pet, ask to see him first and do not hand over any money or goods until you are satisfied your pet is alive, you have seen him/her and it is your pet. If you do not trust the situation don't go ahead with the exchange.
If you are convinced the person having your pet is genuine, and has found your pet (not stolen) offer them the reward (or a reward) even if they say they don't want it or if they don't ask for it. This is just a nice thank you for someone going through the trouble of contacting you and may make sure that person will contact an owner again if he or she finds another pet.
When your pet has been found, dead or alive, please do not forget to let those people looking out for your pet know! Don't forget to inform your insurance and make a claim if you had to pay reward money or if your dog died due to an accident.
