Aggression,
separation anxiety or just excessive pulling cause owners who love their dogs
to despair, making many feel they have no option other than re-homing “man’s
best friend”
But according to
Annette Helder, who has just opened a branch of her famous Dutch dog school in
Edinburgh, this often means we’re just
shifting the unwanted behaviour from our home to somebody else’s. Or worse, many dogs end up being “put to
sleep” because their behaviour problems
are seen as too difficult to treat.
Annette’s
company, Quiraing Dog School (Scotland) helps owners tackle the problems before
it is too late. They use reward-based
training techniques to build a bond of trust between the dog and owner,
encouraging the dog to repeat good behaviour.
Unwanted behaviour is, mostly, ignored which quickly teaches the dog
there’s no benefit in behaving badly. Dangerous behaviour has to be corrected,
obviously, but Annette firmly believes
this can always be achieved without the use of choke chains, electric collars
or other pain inducing systems.
As Annette says
“It’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks.”
